Chat apps

Telem adds web search, page reading and monitors to Claude. You add Telem once as a custom connector, and sign in with your Telem account. There is no API key to copy. The connector then works in Claude on the web, in the desktop and mobile apps, and in Cowork.

  • A Telem account. It is the account that you use in the Telem console. If you have none, sign in to the console once with Google or GitHub.
  • A Claude plan. Every plan can add a custom connector. The Free plan can add one. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds the connector first, and then each member connects.
  • Telem on in each chat. Claude uses a connector in the chats where you turn it on: select +, then Connectors, and turn on Telem.

Connect Claude to Telem

  1. Open Add Telem to Claude. Claude opens the Add custom connector dialog, with the name Telem and the URL already filled in.

  2. Check the name and the URL, and select Add. If Claude shows sign-in settings, keep the ones that it detects.

  3. Select Connect on the Telem connector, and sign in with your Telem account.

  4. Select Allow on the Telem page. If you have more than one project, pick the project first. Telem creates a key for Claude in that project.

To add it by hand instead, go to Customize > Connectors, select + Add and Add custom connector, name it Telem, and enter https://mcp.telem.ai/mcp.

To use Telem in a chat, select +, then Connectors, and turn on Telem.

Monitors work through the connector too, with no API key. In a chat with Telem on, ask Claude to watch the web for something, for example: “Create a Telem monitor for new funding announcements by AI search startups, and check it every day.” Claude uses the key that your sign-in created. See Monitors.

Switch the default search and fetch to Telem

Section titled “Switch the default search and fetch to Telem”

Claude also has its own web search and page reading. To make Telem the default, use one or more of these.

Keep Telem’s tools loaded. In the chat, select +, then Connectors, then Tool access, and choose Always available. Claude then has Telem’s tools from the start of the chat. The setting is for that chat.

Add a line to your instructions. It applies to all your chats:

For web searches and reading web pages, use Telem (telem_search and telem_fetch) instead of the built-in web search and web fetch.
  1. Select your initials in the lower left, then Settings, then Your Claude. In the older Settings layout, it is Account.

  2. Paste the line under Instructions, or under Instructions for Claude in the older layout.

For the chats of one project only, put the line in that project’s instructions instead.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner chooses in Organization settings > Capabilities whether the workspace has Claude’s own web search. Without it, Claude searches the web only through connectors such as Telem.

In one message, name Telem, for example: “Use Telem to find …”.

If your chat’s + menu has a Web search item, as in the older Claude interface, clear its checkmark, so that Claude searches only with Telem in that chat.

Search and read

4 tools
  • telem_search Searches the web on several providers in one call.
  • telem_fetch Reads the full text of up to 5 pages.
  • telem_providers Lists the search providers.
  • telem_session_history Lists the earlier searches in a session.

Monitors

8 tools
  • monitor_create Creates a monitor. Its agent keeps the results that match.
  • monitor_list Lists your monitors that have an agent.
  • monitor_get Gets a monitor and its agent.
  • monitor_agent Gets the agent: its status, its plan and what it found.
  • monitor_changes Reads what the agent found, change by change.
  • monitor_pause Pauses a monitor.
  • monitor_resume Resumes a paused monitor.
  • monitor_delete Ends a monitor.

Claude can ask before it runs monitor_create, monitor_pause, monitor_resume and monitor_delete, because they change your monitors. To stop the questions, go to Customize > Connectors, select Telem, and under Tool permissions set those tools to Always allow. Each tool can be Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked. Blocked stops Claude from using the tool.

  • The key that Telem creates. When you select Allow, Telem creates an API key named MCP: claude.ai and the app’s name, in the project that you picked. The key has Telem Search and Telem Data, and it expires after 90 days. Claude never sees the key. You find it in the console, under API keys.
  • After 90 days, the key expires and Telem stops working in Claude. Connect again from Customize > Connectors.
  • Each connection creates a new key. If you remove the connector and add it again, Telem creates a second key. The first key stays until it expires, so revoke it in the console.
  • Telem’s defaults. A connector cannot send your .telem/telem.json options or Telem’s settings headers. So searches run with Telem’s defaults, with auto-routing on. To set the tier or the providers, use an integration that reads your options, such as Claude Code.
  • Nothing on your computer. Claude connects to Telem from Anthropic’s cloud, in the desktop and mobile apps too.
If something goes wrong
  • “Your Telem account has no project yet”: sign in to the Telem console once, then connect again.
  • “You can’t create API keys in this project”: your role in that project cannot create keys. Pick another project, or ask the Organization administrator. See Who can create keys.
  • “This sign-in link is not valid or has expired” or “This sign-in page is not valid or has expired”: the sign-in took too long, or you started a second connection in the same browser. Start again from Claude.
  • Telem worked, then stopped: its key was revoked or has expired. Connect again.

Telem updates the server, so there is nothing to update. To remove Telem:

  1. Remove the connector. In Customize > Connectors, select Remove on Telem, or use its three-dot menu. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner removes it in Organization settings > Connectors.

  2. Revoke the key in the Telem console: open the project, then API keys, and revoke the key whose name starts with MCP: claude.ai.

Revoking the key alone also disconnects Claude. Its calls stop within about 5 minutes.
